Bari Weiss has said it as clearly as anyone alive: when antisemitism moves from the shameful fringe into the public square, it is not about Jews. It is never about Jews. It is about everyone else. It is an early warning system — a sign that a society is breaking down. That it is dying.

Darrow Miller writes as a Gentile, and as a Christian who has spent a lifetime arguing that ideas have consequences for nations. He wears your symbol as a confession of debt, not as a project. Friendship that treats Jewish people as a target for conversion instrumentalizes the relationship and undermines trust. He will not do that here.

You cannot hate the root and love the fruit. Darrow Miller

Thomas Cahill wrote that we can hardly get up in the morning or cross the street without being Jewish — that we dream Jewish dreams and hope Jewish hopes. Winston Churchill, in 1920, said the West owes the Jews “a system of ethics which, even if it were entirely separated from the supernatural, would be incomparably the most precious possession of mankind,” and that on that system the whole of existing civilization was built out of the wreck of Rome. George Gilder’s The Israel Test is in this argument: the Jews as cherished contribution and resented standard.

The canary is an alarm in the mine. It is not a claim that the Jews can be erased. The covenant with Abraham — Genesis 12 — is why they cannot. Empires that came against them are gone. Egypt. Babylon. Rome. The Reich. The Jewish people remain. The title is the claim: they cannot be erased. When a culture loses its morals it goes after the Jews first. It is never just about the Jews. The gas in the mine does not stop with them.

This is not a Likud brief. Not a conversion program. Not a travelogue. Not a defense of every Israeli government. It is a diagnostic of a West discarding the moral universe it received from the Jewish people. Presence, voice, and action are what remain for those who are not Jews and will not look away.

From readers in this argument

“It’s a masterpiece of visionary polemics, focused on the pivotal issue of our epoch: Israel as the embattled source and numinous savior of our civilization.”

George Gilder, author of The Israel Test

“Western civilization, as I argue in my own book, began at Mount Sinai. Darrow Miller’s The Jews Cannot Be Erased is the Christian complement to that argument — a comprehensive account of what the Jewish people gave the world, why the world has always responded with hatred, and what the church must do about it. The grand alliance of Jews who stand firm and Christians who recognize the civilizational foundations they have built on is the only thing that can save the West, and this book is the manual for the Christian side of that alliance.”

Josh Hammer, Senior Editor-at-Large, Newsweek; author of Israel and Civilization
